I remember when he was murdered - it was "in the neighborhood" enough of Colorado that it felt particularly close to home - I was in high school and we ended up within a couple years having an all-school screening of a documentary about his murder and q&a after about how to deal with homophobia and hate. It does seems like there was a period where that kind of violent behavior was increasingly unacceptable, but it seems like there's been a LOT of backsliding. Just my impression.

It is true though... back when I lived in Northern VA, our neighbour wouldn't cross the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge to get into DC and it blew my mind. The Arlington side was their limit. Right across the bridge you've got Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, the Exorcist steps with tourists taking their photo there. It's hardly early 80s Beirut.
Now I'm on the west side of Atlanta and you have people near me who I doubt would even walk down the ethnic aisle at Kroger without clutching their gun.

My brother-in-law is conservative. Not nutso conservative—more a proper traditionalist than a reactionary—but he's been fond of saying that Toronto should have a huge wall around it to keep its residents in. I really like the guy—he's got a wonderful heart and, to his credit, in his senior years he's begun interrogating a lot of his truths and been reevaluating—but there is that discomfort with "those" people that is uncomfortable.
