There's a weird echo of early 60s young white liberal, civil rights worker in his claim about black workers once upon a time. One thing that attracted young white people to civil rights, especially those from the suburbs, was the belief that their life to that point had been inauthentic—controlled, sanitized, marketed—whereas black people and the poor (the folk) lived an authentic life. So head on down to Mississippi or Harlem to experience real life, where people may have it tough but they are authentically happy, free of the artificiality of modern life. The contradiction in all this—at least one contradiction, anyway—is that these kids were there to help change the lives of the poor, be it thru desegregation or setting up free medical clinics, etc. Changing the authentic, telling the people who have eluded the evils of modern life how to change even while regarding them as their spiritual betters. The Civil Rights movement was pretty doomed to a crack up given that significant contradiction in the partners' agendas.
