Re: No, No, Don't Worry. Racism is Pretty Much Over.
She has been on the right side of Diane Abbott for about 30 years is all. Like I said previously you are more than welcome to her. I have many black friends who simply can't stand her and literally cringe at the site of her on TV. I remember sitting with my pal Errol at his house when she came on TV and he says "her she goes again black, black, black, putting any just cause back another 50 years". I think it was most likely Question Time.Silent Majority wrote: ↑29 May 2018, 2:55pmI used to dislike her because she was a poor media performer, but she's been consistently on the right side of history for thirty years.Marky Dread wrote: ↑29 May 2018, 12:59pmYou are welcome to all her bullshit.
In a 1984 interview with the journal of the Labour Committee on Ireland (LCI), when asked if she saw herself as Black British, Abbott replied "No - I would self-define myself just as Black. Though I was born here in London, I couldn't identify as British and anyway most British people don't accept us as British. God! British people can be so racist".
"Most British people" so that's all colours Britain is a total multicultural race country. What a stupid fucking negative thing to say it's bullshit like this that fuels ignorance and hatred.
In 1988, Abbott claimed at a black studies conference in Philadelphia that "the British invented racism".
Only a fool would deny the existence of racism in any country but to say it was invented by the British is again just plain ignorant.
...and my all time Diane Abbott classic award goes to this fine tailored piece of bullshit.
In 1996, Abbott was criticised after she claimed that at her local hospital "blonde, blue-eyed Finnish girls" were unsuitable as nurses because they had "never met a black person before". In response Marc Wadsworth, executive member of the Anti-Racist Alliance, who is half-Finnish, pointed out that the then-current Miss Finland, Lola Odusoga, is black, of Nigerian and Finnish descent. "She's a black Finn like me," he said. Abbott's position was supported by fellow Labour MP Bernie Grant: "Bringing someone here from Finland who has never seen a black person before and expecting them to have some empathy with black people is nonsense. Scandinavian people don't know black people—they probably don't know how to take their temperature". 10/10 for toatal ignorance.
Seriously James old pal you are welcome to her.

I think this is something our modern culture with films TV etc have failed us miserably with. Which is one of the amusing things about the royal wedding, having the African-American minister talking about slavery in the presence of the heads of a key institution that profited from and disseminated an ideology of white supremacy. Most of their discomfort was, I suspect, due to his style, but the content should have also made them uncomfortable.

Yep. Also we have come to talk about racism as a propositional attitude rather than a social structure with mateial implications. Thinking of it by analogy with sin rather than as a social structure or interconnected behaviors that concentrate power. A hell of a lot of racism is done by people who don’t necessarily hold the proposition “blacks are inferior” in their heads.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑29 May 2018, 5:12pmWhich is one of the amusing things about the royal wedding, having the African-American minister talking about slavery in the presence of the heads of a key institution that profited from and disseminated an ideology of white supremacy. Re: No, No, Don't Worry. Racism is Pretty Much Over.
Various critiques of modern liberalism—Tom Frank especially comes to mind—have emphasized its promotion of merit, which sounds wonderful. It's colour-blind, it's gender-neutral, etc, etc. What's not to like? But it ignores structural problems and turns deep culturally embedded issues to, fundamentally, the free market. Did you succeed? Great, you deserve it! Did you fail, too bad, but you deserve it! So, yeah, it allows people who sincerely don't believe they are racist to promote principles that entrench it and place barriers to even seeing it as an ongoing problem.eumaas wrote: ↑29 May 2018, 5:22pmAlso we have come to talk about racism as a propositional attitude rather than a social structure with mateial implications. Yep a dislike or distrust of anyone different to yourself has been happening for 40,000 years. Still happens to this day in the remotest most cut off parts of the world. Yes. Race-based slavery is a historically recent phenomenon. The point about xenophobia is fine, obviously various social groups have fought each other throughout history, but color racism and race-based slavery are modern concepts.101Walterton wrote: ↑29 May 2018, 8:49pmam I wrong then?eumaas wrote: ↑29 May 2018, 8:46pmyou can keep asserting stuff without bothering to crack open a book, but it doesn't mean the idea you formulated in your head has anything to do with historical truth.101Walterton wrote: ↑29 May 2018, 8:42pmYep a dislike or distrust of anyone different to yourself has been happening for 40,000 years. Nothing race-particular or -justified there.
