Have you noticed that the more global the world becomes the less global the people become- the world is currently more tribal than it has been since TV was invented.

Re: The Tribalism Thread
People crave both differentiation and belonging at the same time. Add to that our seeming propensity for only giving a damn about a relatively small and choice group and globalism or not, we're tribal.Flex wrote:Jihad versus McWorld.101Walterton wrote:Have you noticed that the more global the world becomes the less global the people become- the world is currently more tribal than it has been since TV was invented.

Very true. A few years ago everyone in the world wanted to be white middle class American and wear blue jeans. In the UK Indian / Pakistani / Bangladeshi kids just wanted to be Anglo whereas now everyone is proud (quite rightly) of their own roots and are happy to display it. Asian kids no longer want to be Michael Jordan or David Beckham they want to be Muralitharin or Sachin Tendulka. Kids in New Zealand are speaking in Maori for the first time in 50 odd years.Flex wrote:Jihad versus McWorld.101Walterton wrote:Have you noticed that the more global the world becomes the less global the people become- the world is currently more tribal than it has been since TV was invented.

Couldn't agree more. For most of us, we wish to stand out or at least command some respect, but only in our monkey sphere. We are more comfortable with a limited number of criteria by which we wish to be judged, and seek out and/or conform to a tribe that privileges those criteria. Out of insecurity and fear, we demonize those tribes that value different criteria.eumaas wrote:People crave both differentiation and belonging at the same time.

In N-A circles they give the number 500 as the maximum population for an organic community.Dr. Medulla wrote:Couldn't agree more. Gotta say, though, globalization (in the sense of the meeting of cultures, not commerce) has brought such wonderfully weird things... a big example that sticks out for me is how my dad (he was 62 and an old Southern Trotskyist, mind you!) would listen to bhangra at work. Yeah. My dad liked bhangra.

Re: The Tribalism Thread
Very true. It was interesting to note on my West African trip, that the nation building in those countries (in my case Ghana, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin) has been quite succesful. Much more succesful than us in the west have been made to believe through the mass media. It is not all about civil war or tribal hostilities in Africa. Of course we have the politically unstable and collapsing states as well, where the situation is the opposite. But in the politically stable / relatively stable countries the citizens seem to be very proud of their country and national symbols. You can sense a feeling of unity and people identify themselves as Togolese, Ghanaian etc. Even more so when it comes to crucial matters such as football.eumaas wrote:People crave both differentiation and belonging at the same time.
At the same time people still have strong ethnic identity and retain their loyalty to their own ethnic group. Even in Ghana, which is the most "modern" and "westernized" of those four countries. Religious identity is as strong but the adherents of different religions are tolerant towards each other. I would go as far as to say, that in many instances they respect each others religions and beliefs. Syncretism of different traditions is common and has gone on through centuries. Somehow I found the new evangelical churhes the most closed minded of all religious groups.
