Those sobriety checkpoints are commonplace in the US - I've run into them in major cities, suburban areas, rural areas. Went through one last week, in fact. Obviously they are unconstitutional (and age discriminatory - older people are waved through the checkpoints, in my experience) but no one seems to care.

Oh, we have checkpoints here, too, during the Christmas party season, but this goes even further in that you wouldn't have to display any evidence of being intoxicated for them to make you blow. Immediately, there's no standard of presumed innocence—cop sees you, needs no reason to make you submit to a test to prove that you're innocent. Horrible precedent to set for future expansion of police power.

NZ is getting in on the totalitarianism:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/3 ... chael-Laws
Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws says giving the "underclass" money to be sterilised will address our child abuse problem.

Critics last night labelled the suggestion "totalitarian", "draconian" and "reprehensible", and questioned his appropriateness as a city leader.

Mr Laws said the children of beneficiaries, drug addicts and criminals had little chance in life. He offered his observations after he was approached for comment on the death of two-year-old Wanganui boy Karl Perigo-Check, the son of a convicted murderer and gang member.

"If we gave $10,000 to certain people and said 'we'll voluntarily sterilise you' then all of society would be better off. There'd be less dead children and less social problems.

"Do we really expect these children to become doctors or brain surgeons?"

No idea, bad or good (especially bad, it seems), ever goes out of vogue completely.

Growing up in the 70's every street used to have at least one "shameless" family, loads of kids, garden looks like a scrapyard, fat parents who never seemed to lift a finger, nowadays you have whole streets like it.

Maybe simplistic but I think it was Thatcher and her policies that are directly to blame, the gap between rich and poor in this country has never been so vast. A lot of people missed the "big grab" and basically gave up any hope of bettering themselves, their kids have inherited their values with disasterous results. A solution? Fuck knows? It's a real mess :disshame:

Certainly doesn't seem that way from the context given.
