Jesus fucking Christ.
Not to make light of rape, but I can't believe the source. It's an Australian rape case and the attorney's name is Paul Hogan? Did he say "You call that a cock? Now that's a cock."

What the fuck is wrong with people? This (and because I don't want him to turn into a douchebag) is why I am going to try my damndest to raise VH Jr to be a feminist.

I went to a book sale the other day to get books for the kids (retail price is ridiculous). Bought a huge pile of books for my son, adventures, mysteries, sports stories, monster stories, space exploration, fantasy etc etc. I bought one book for my daughter which was actually a boys book about being a greenie.
Every girls book was about boyfriends, girls falling out, family break ups and shopping malls. Disgraceful, the women that write these books should be ashamed.

I agree with you, but ont he other hand, why are mysteries, sports books, monster stories, space exploration, etc. considered boys' books in the first place? Why aren't there any boys' books about being in touch with their feelings and shit? OK, I know I sound obnoxious, but my point is, can't any of those books be considered gender-neutral?

I was chatting with eumaas about this a little last night and, I can't speak for him, but I agree with the thrust of what you're saying.

Girls are forced to read very, very gendered shit. To me, the issue isn't that they're reading about relationships, or issues with families, or whatever else, it's that it's presented in about the most insulting and facile manner possible.

And, as you say, the other side of the coin is boy's books which are just as stupid and used to promote heteronormative, hyper-masculine standards.

As you say, an increasing emphasis on gender-neutral titles, or books aimed at certain target audiences which don't promote the most banal and harmful stereotypes our society has to offer, would do a world of good.

Frankly, if I were a parent with a daughter I'd be trying to turn her onto writers like Ursula K. LeGuinn as early as possible.

Oh, and while not perfect, this isn't a bad resource: http://ameliabloomer.wordpress.com/

I like that, Flex. I want VH Jr. to be a feminist, so I appreciate hearing about good books for kids.
