I can't remember how he put it, but I remember Jello Biafra making the point that the moment the kids are actually born, Right-To-Lifers stop giving a shit about them.Dr. Medulla wrote:Another Carlinism re. abortion: "Conservatives want live babies so they can raise them to be dead soldiers."JennyB wrote:I think George Carlin summed the debate up best when he said, "did you ever notice that the people who are against legalized abortion are the people you'd least likely wanna fuck?"Still216 wrote:None of this middling language re: abortion matters to the dedicated anti-abortion political movement. Anything but 100% commitment to their cause is 100% commitment against their cause. No compromise or conflict exhibited in action or speech will change that in the eyes of the true anti-abortion believers. How many self-identifying pro-lifers did Obama win over by writing things like "Abortion vexes" in his book? Zero. Yeah. Is this really that difficult for politicians to figure out?Flex wrote:Jeffrey Toobin has an excellent piece on the Stupak Amendment:The President is pro-choice, and he has signalled some misgivings about the Stupak amendment. But, like many modern pro-choice Democrats, he has worked so hard to be respectful of his opponents on this issue that he sometimes seems to cede them the moral high ground. In his book “The Audacity of Hope,” he describes the “undeniably difficult issue of abortion” and ponders “the middle-aged feminist who still mourns her abortion.” Elsewhere, he announces, “Abortion vexes.” The opponents of abortion aren’t vexed—they are mobilized, focussed, and driven to succeed.

Gen Y Over-Cautiousness Might Explain Abortion Attitudes. Thought this might be of some interest, particularly for the Doc, given past discussions on generational theory. It's just a short piece, but touches on a few issues that have been brought up on these boards over time, regarding the character of Gen Y and rights in general.

Re: No, No, Don't Worry. Sexism is Pretty Much Over.
Two things immediately struck me from a S & H perspective. Gen Y's last appearance—the type, that is—was the WWII "greatest generation," who initiated the Baby Boom. Is there a connection in attitudes? (My inclination is to say no—the circumstances of now and then are extremely dissimilar.) However, Millennials are said to be more group-oriented, less individualist, and an anti-abortion stance does shift abortion as an individual choice to one of the group removing that choice. So, some tentative support there.Flex wrote:Gen Y Over-Cautiousness Might Explain Abortion Attitudes.
