However, in the major markets (NYC, LA, etc) they have the "PPM" system, which uses a pager-type device instead of diaries. The stations in radio markets using the system (including college and public radio stations) put an inaudible-by-the-human-ear signal in their audio that the pager picks up and tabulates, so it's a 100% accurate representation of what people actually listen to (if they wear the pager on their person, like they're supposed to) and for how long - whether they're driving, at home, walking through a store with a radio station playing, etc.

One of the more interesting things - Rush's ratings have dropped dramatically with this system. Some fans of his may have just been writing "11a-3p" in the diaries when they're actually listening for more like 90 minutes. Not that fans of other radio shows don't or didn't do the same thing - for example, I imagine a lot of Howard Stern's fans probably wrote down that they listened for 5 hours each morning when they really didn't, but he was off FM radio before this PPM system started, so who knows.

Anyway, PPM was also a major reason why Indie 103.1 in LA went away (it earned a ZERO rating the first rating period the PPM system was used - with the old diary system it earned a .5, which, although it isn't great, is higher than zero).

And as a side note, Rush's "huge audience", inflated or not, is by default. He's on in middays, which is and always has been a dead zone in radio.

BTW, one of the really weird things about the ass-kissing of Rush these days is that a recent poll suggested that Bush is more popular than him right now, and Republicans won't even speak his name in public.

Another poll released that confirms Rush's unpopularity with the general population, but connection with the right. Is there anyone in the Republican Party who has the stones to take Rush down the way Eisenhower did McCarthy? Or do they just prefer to lose a few more elections?

Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. It's a sign of our cultural degeneracy that we take junkie entertainers like Limbaugh or various rockstars seriously when they talk about politics.

Are conservatives clever and discerning? One study says maybe not.

If you haven't watched Palin's rambling resignation speech, it's worth making some popcorn first. Not quite up to the bitter standard of Nixon in '62, but it's entertaining all the same.

On the bright side, someone from their own organization at least called them out on being fucking morons (both for their moronic statements, and being double moronic by posting them on a public forum)...
