David Frum on Rush Limbaugh:

Rush is a walking stereotype of self-indulgence
Rush is to the Republicanism of the 2000s what Jesse Jackson was to the Democratic party in the 1980s

I read that a few days ago. It's not a bad critique overall, tho I don't get the impression Frum has any idea where the GOP should go regain any sense of legitimacy to the broader electorate.Bankrobber wrote:David Frum on Rush Limbaugh:

I read the article last week and saw him on Hardball last night. Nothing he has said has led me to conclude differently than you.Dr. Medulla wrote:I read that a few days ago. Re: The Future of the Republican Party
Though he did say the GOP needs to offer some sort of alternate plan if they are going to vote against the bailout (which he does disagree with and thinks Republicans should vote against.), because otherwise it looks like they are just playing politics and have no core principles. He didn't offer any actual sort of plan, but admitting that they need one is probably the first step to recovery.

I'm just glad somebody isn't totally scared of Rush. Looks like Frum is being shunned by the Hannities and Levins of the world. They make sure to add "the Canadian" before his name when mentioned.

I don't see any reason to vote against the latest round of economic interventionism if you didn't vote against the prior rounds.

Well, that's the point. Republicans only seem to develop conservative principles when they're not running the show.eumaas wrote:I don't see any reason to vote against the latest round of economic interventionism if you didn't vote against the prior rounds.

Re: The Future of the Republican Party
You know, I've always wondered how they tabulate radio ratings...is there a Nielson system? Anyway, I can only assume thousands listen to all three hours. Most only listen to 30mins or so while on lunch break.Rush claims 20 million listeners

Also, given the background noise tendency talk radio has (at least for me), how many of his listeners are still in the mold of the mindless, slavering dittoheads of the 90s, vs. "eh, it keeps me from dozing off in traffic."Bankrobber wrote:You know, I've always wondered how they tabulate radio ratings...is there a Nielson system? I suppose he gets credit for say that if they don't know which direction to turn, hitting the brakes before driving off the cliff is a positive step.Wolter wrote:Though he did say the GOP needs to offer some sort of alternate plan if they are going to vote against the bailout (which he does disagree with and thinks Republicans should vote against.), because otherwise it looks like they are just playing politics and have no core principles. His mother, Barbara Frum was a monster of the CBC national news. Gingrich is the only other notable who has called out Limbaugh and the rest of the party to stop thinking that they can transplant Reagan. He's wrong about Reagan in the 80s, but at least he's smart enough to realize that circumstances dictate policy, not blind faith in an ideology.Bankrobber wrote:I'm just glad somebody isn't totally scared of Rush. Re: The Future of the Republican Party
I will admit it is entertainiing in a masochistic way. I listen to Rush in the 15min drive home after class. I rationalize it by saying "I know what the enemy thinks" but really it is just something to vent rage at while I'm alone.Wolter wrote:Also, given the background noise tendency talk radio has (at least for me), how many of his listeners are still in the mold of the mindless, slavering dittoheads of the 90s, vs. "eh, it keeps me from dozing off in traffic."Bankrobber wrote:You know, I've always wondered how they tabulate radio ratings...is there a Nielson system? Re: The Future of the Republican Party
My old boss in NC was a stereotypical baby boomer liberal intellectual. He lived in Durham and commuted around sixty miles to Greensboro each morning and listened to right wing talk radio to get him angry and ready to take on university administrators. Whatever works, I guess.Wolter wrote:Also, given the background noise tendency talk radio has (at least for me), how many of his listeners are still in the mold of the mindless, slavering dittoheads of the 90s, vs. "eh, it keeps me from dozing off in traffic."Bankrobber wrote:You know, I've always wondered how they tabulate radio ratings...is there a Nielson system? A liberal's defense of Rush. I reject it completely.
