Re: The Gun Politics Thread
It's a weird passivity that runs counter to the gun rights argument that having a gun ensures that you are the prime agent of your life. We're told that without a gun, criminals and government would run amok, raping and slaughtering and treading on you. Having a gun protects you from that. But apparently free access to guns still means raping and slaughtering (tho maybe less treading). So having more guns won't reduce the amount of killing after all, that we're all basically prey. Which sounds pretty pessimistic and dystopic, but, no, that's actually part of a free society. Just the way Jefferson et al drew it up, right, originalists?

Yes, utterly unbelievable. This kind of stuff just doesn't happen with numbing regularity in America.“It is unbelievable that this would happen in a small, close-knit community like Marshall County,” the governor said.

Let’s stop praying for the victims of the last shooting (forgot who they were) and start praying for the new victims. My thoughts and prayers are with them.
I am going away for a few days so my thoughts and prayers also go out to the victims after that just in case there is a shooting whilst I am away.

How do we even do that when the president doesn't even mention the shooting?101Walterton wrote: ↑24 Jan 2018, 2:24pmLet’s stop praying for the victims of the last shooting (forgot who they were) and start praying for the new victims. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

No. But he's always been a faithful NRA parrot, so he could be.

Re: The Gun Politics Thread
My mom is a recently retired teacher and she told me last night about how they practiced taking kids into a dark room (she taught at the high school level) and barricading the door until the fire alarm was sounded - at which time it meant it was safe to evacuate the building and assemble in the parking lot. It sounds like the shooter knew this drill (which is probably common across many schools) and used it. It wouldn't have mattered if teachers were armed - they were still essentially sitting ducks. I'm just so very tired of thoughts and prayers and hashtags and people changing temporarily changing their Facebook profile photo to stand with the victims. Enough is enough. Fix it. Nothing else needs to be said or done. Just. Fix. It.
