It's still soft but that's a big contrast to the articles of a couple years ago.

Yeah, that article is a bit surprisingly. gives one a pretty decent sense of the sort of atmosphere in China right now regarding capitalism and socialism. Kind of an uneasing juxtaposition of the two, at the moment. I got a bit of a sense of that in my time in China, although I imagine with the Olympics coming and the recent earthquake the landscape has changed somewhat (at least, in some areas).

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead

Beijing is a bizarre city. I saw tons of Chinese people giving flowers to the altar of Mao's body the same day I went to a mall that was strikingly similar to that of an American mall. Ironically, at this mall there were no places to sit except in partitioned areas as part of restaurants for customers. Having walked around all day, my entire body was tired and I found a ledge to sit on, obstructing nothing. Sure enough, a security guard came over and told me to move. So the only way I could sit in a public area would be if I had enough money to buy something at a store.Flex wrote:Yeah, that article is a bit surprisingly. gives one a pretty decent sense of the sort of atmosphere in China right now regarding capitalism and socialism. Oh and this was a gem of a photo:
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
