I only know about the baffling existence of of the Oh God trilogy from Wolter and Ali's podcast. The eighties were weird.

It may be entirely unfunny on viewing today, but I loved the first one as a kid (which might be the last time I saw it too). George Burns was a goddamned treasure.

To be fair, the first one was the 70s, and directed by Carl Reiner, and *might* hold up now. The second, Oh God! Book Two, was...not. And does not. Though it does have a scene of a little girl being driven around by an invisible God on a motorcycle.

We watched it last night (oddly enough, it was on a movie channel this afternoon) and, well, it's pretty meh. It seems like a constant build up to nothing. I ended up more interested in it as a historical document, reflecting/contributing to the resurgence of Christianity in the 1970s, particularly the strain that emphasized a personal relationship with Christ.
Oh God! has a more liberal spin than the increasingly conservative take on Christianity into the 80s, but it does fit with Americans' growing emphasis on the spiritual, especially in a very public way.
