I'm by no means as knowledgeable as any of you, but perhaps another perspective is that the state affords some freedoms , whilst restricting some others?
Try a country where the State does not protect your freedom and you will get a different perspective on restriction.
By freedom I mean access to education / information, protection from harm to your person or property, democracy etc...

Yeah, I understand and I don't disagree . I'm not against the entity of a state when it can effectively meet the needs of the people that participate in it, like you said providing access to education, etc. I was just throwing a thought out.

"Things as certain as death and taxes, can be more firmly believed." - Defoe (not Jermaine)

Don't like paying tax ( i get hammered) but it's a neccessary evil..It's where my hard earned goes that pisses me off..

In an ideal world you would receive a form every year asking where you want your money to go, I would much prefer mine to be spent on education, health, the elderly, transport etc rather than buying another bloody nuclear submarine or providing index linked pensions for whitehall mandarins, the parasitic Royals wouldn't get a bean off of me..

If you like free enterprise**, print and read this:

EDIT: also worth reading: http://mises.org/rothbard/warpeace.asp

If you like socialism, browse this (it's far too massive to print):
http://www.infoshop.org/faq/index.html

And consider what the social contract would be if actually spelled out:

I've studied the phenomenon of neo-provincialism in self-isolating online communities but this place takes the fucking cake.

Nope.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. Some chick said that back in the 60s.
Kris Kristofferson ain't no damn chick, and he resents the implication.

I love the fact that the original poster was a liberal until it involved some level of self-sacrifice. -mate
