What struck you as wrong about McCain? I'm just looking for particular reasons.
Mine (in order of appearance):
1. His pro-war statements.
2. General kowtowing to the Bush regime.
3. The Palin pick as it pandered to the rabble.
4. Supporting the bailout, though both candidates were guilty of this.

Re: Contra McCain
Apart from his positions on the Iraq occupation and potential conflict with Iran, his conduct during the campaign was abysmal. Picking Palin without vetting her was unforgivably reckless. He never came off as sincere whatsoever, saying whatever seemed appealing. No consistency of message or tactics. In other words, he ran like an old man way past his prime and consumed by election fever. Not the worst bastard to ever be so afflicted, but he wasn't an appealing sight.

That's pretty much it.

Re: Contra McCain
And worse...given his somewhat contrite-sounding concession speech...he knew this all along. It's one thing if you're too fucking stupid or craven or caught up in it to know when you've compromised yourself. It's another to knowingly chuck away years of being (relatively) principled to go in the gutter and basically spell it out for your handlers that no price is too big for victory. His guilt was palpable in that speech. It may be moreso if Stevens cuts a deal with Palin to step aside so she gets his Senate seat upon reelection.Dr. Medulla wrote:Apart from his positions on the Iraq occupation and potential conflict with Iran, his conduct during the campaign was abysmal. What he knew, when he knew it...that's always the kicker. And the people--and later the press--knew he was in control of the campaign bus. That's when he lost the country. Semi-authenticity is what got him into the race. Scrapping it so brazenly is what took him out of the race.
Re: Contra McCain
All of the above, plus his irresponsible choice for VP. Since he's about 150 years old, and the presidency tends to age a person at warp speed anyway, i don't think he would have made it through the first half of his term, and we would be stuck with that whack-job as president.eumaas wrote:What struck you as wrong about McCain? Re: Contra McCain
Bingo. Whether he deserved the maverick label is debatable—I think it's more a reflection of how rigourous loyalty was regarded in the GOP that him slightly deviating once in a while made him some kind of independent spirit—but it was undeniable that he signed onto the orthodox stance once he got the nomination, and that killed a lot of the positive buzz around him. The more he talked about being a maverick, the more hollow it sounded. His only chance of winning would have been to stay positive the entire campaign, to run away from any kind of Roveian advice he received. It still might not have mattered, but his campaign tactics destroyed the one thing he had going for him.Rat Patrol wrote:What he knew, when he knew it...that's always the kicker.
