I am REALLY excited right now! I am more excited for this then I have ever been for any Canadian election. My faith in Americans has been restored.

Ohh I really can't wait to be done with hearing the word "Maverick"

Well as was mentioned before, the bar has been set so low that anything within a 100 miles of competence will be an improvement.

Having said that, I really hope this "he's the messiah" business, quiets down. It's as sickening as "Maverick ;) "!

I, for one, would like to take this opportunity to welcome Steve back as a regular board participant, as he follows his libertarian principles and valiantly exposes the excesses of big government for the next four years. Yes, he can!

Republicans betrayed their stated principles and ran this country into the ground. Fuck 'em.

Or they did follow their principles—"government doesn't work"—and the expected result occurred. The battle for the Republican Party is going to be fun to watch, as the demonization tactics normally reserved for general elections goes internal.

Har har. Actually, I think big gov't is pretty unwieldy just based on organizational theory. So not really a surprise that they fucked it up, especially considering that neoconservative ideology is ridiculous.

Squabbling is soon to start...

But when your philosophy is that govt doesn't work, as an elected official, would you be inclined to prove your philosophy wrong? Are you even capable of a high level of competence? Whether big govt can work is just a side issue (personally, I think the degree of centralization is more critical than actual size in terms of effectiveness), it's somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy when the guy hired for the job isn't inclined to try to do his job well. It's about setting the ceiling so low that even reaching it is inadequate.

In other news, Alaska has seemingly re-elected convicted felon Ted Stevens. Move over Texas and Florida, there's a new state on the crazy and shameless block.

Love this. It's one of the posters at Volokh reacting to Obama's win. First, I'm calling bullshit—I doubt this guy even owns a business. But, let's pretend that it is all true, what a fuck of a nice guy, shutting down his business, putting his employees out of work because his taxes might go up. Boo hoo, I'm the mythical "can do" American businessman who quits at the first sign of a tax hike, even tho America's tax situation is still far far far less rigourous than most other parts of the world.
I certainly hope Mr. Obama fails to implement his reckless and juvenile economic plans. But I'm not waiting around to see.

Anticipating the result we have seen tonight, I have already begun the legal niceties required to liquidate my small business before the end of the year. Immediate consequences: 9 employees added to the unemployment benefits dole, 27 dependents moved from a 100% company paid health insurance plan to the uninsured rolls, approximately 200K$/annum sales tax collections gone, approximately 100K$/annum in Social Security taxes gone, approximately $150K$/annum income taxes gone.

Now, it is true that some other organization will pick-up my most of my sales eventually, but mine is a tiny, low-tech niche market. Some projects will simply not be feasible at the higher costs required by my successors to the market, and some will necessarily be delayed. My people will eventually also find different employment, but I fear none to soon.

Why am I taking this seemingly impulsive, arguably disastrous action?

I will not surrender the 1/3 additional capital gains taxes that Obama will, at a minimum, impose on my equity. This equity has been built-up over 20 years of earnest toil and personal deprivation. It exists only after paying sub-chapter C corporate taxes as well. Also, a good portion of my "gains" are nothing more than the result of deflation of our currency.

I'm 45 years old. I want to see what it's like to be a "taker" for a while. So, yes, there is an element of spite here, but as our president elect might say; "in your face."

That just seems unlikely. I'm pretty sure the neocons believe gov't works. I'm not really buying that they didn't try to make it work and that this was all some kind of show to demonstrate why big gov't is bad--I'm pretty sure it was just a naked power grab.

And centralization is a major factor in its own right, but size also matters in terms of knowledge distribution. Economics (and game theory) have borne this out. What's funny is that this all started as an argument against state socialism, but it also applies to large corporations and governments.
