And, hard to believe, it's become even cruder, more debased in the years since that was written. It's become the home to a pack of rabid dogs, ready to attack anything. At least when the liberal coalition broke apart, they just became demoralized. No one expected liberals to turn to violence (small cells of student radicals excepted). Does anyone doubt that what's the left of the Republican movement won't become angrier and more violent until saner moderates feel it safe to come back to that party?Maybe in combination we have the whole answer: the nationalist tendencies inherent in any people are mixing with the intrinsic flabbiness of conservative thought and the baseness of the media culture to generate uncritical loyalty to a nutty president who happens to be a Republican, a party which is increasingly dominated at the intellectual level by internationalist social democrats who know nothing and care nothing for liberty or traditional American values.

The gym has Fox television on, and perhaps I should be grateful, because otherwise it would not have dawned on me just how popular and widely embraced stupid is. By stupid, I don't really intend insult. Stupid is a mental outlook that affirms the crude and base while eschewing the noble and thoughtful. It is an attitude of mind that can be adopted by both low lights and bright lights.

That's fucking great. And depressingly prescient—that is, as bad as it was in '04, the right has found that the bottom of the barrel hadn't been reached. This passage really does capture the state of the right today:eumaas wrote:Another by Tucker:

The significant difference is that now it's not just "liberals" who are the faggy intellectuals. Go with your gut or else you're a fag.Intellectual affectations, long deductive processes, self-control, and abstract ideals are fine in many cases, they conclude, but not as effective for some purposes as base instinct, first thoughts, anger unleashed, and raw emotion.
That piece should be emailed to every right wing columnist and pundit as a "see what you've wrought" punch in the nose. Those who acknowledge and express some kind of remorse (perhaps only internally) will realize that they don't belong to the GOP anymore.

Tucker's a right-libertarian (and a Roman Catholic of conservative tastes), yet he knocks this one out of the park. Conservative yet not a vulgar libertarian. What a contrast to the kinds of pseudo-libertarians one sees around the internet pounding their chests. This infectious anti-intellectualism is a horrible plague that threatens the health of our polity.

I'm intrigued that he writes about more than liberals trying to take away his guns.eumaas wrote:Tucker's a right-libertarian (and a Roman Catholic of conservative tastes), yet he knocks this one out of the park.
