The hype surrounding this man has gotten ridiculous. It's like people have surrendered their reason at the door.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Some may see him as a savior, sure, they're overdoing it. But we need a change from the way it has been for the last 8.

That's true, but even if elected he's just a fucking president, not the goddamn messiah.tepista wrote:Some may see him as a savior, sure, they're overdoing it. But we need a change from the way it has been for the last 8.

I predicted that weeks, if not months ago, on this very board. (Probably in this thread even ... I think I'll go back and check.)BostonBeaneater wrote:I'll call it now. Either the black chap sits in the big seat or the cities will burn and riot.
I did qualify it, however, by saying that the rioting will only commence if it's clear that GOP vote suppression stole the election. But since that's the only way McCain will win, that's hardly a qualification...

That's the one thing (well, main thing) about Obama that I'm uncomfortable with—the whole cult of personality that is mainly younger supporters have thrust upon him (or maybe I'm naive and he's actually orchestrated it all). A quick skimming of history shows that a time of crisis and a charismatic leader doesn't necessarily end well.eumaas wrote:That's true, but even if elected he's just a fucking president, not the goddamn messiah.tepista wrote:Some may see him as a savior, sure, they're overdoing it. I'm OK with it. The other side got there by making Bush into a demigod of sorts. Heh—you're one of the few non-Republicans bothered by the (relatively) high turnout. But, yeah, I'd feel better if high turnout in Canada and the U.S. was connected to civic principle as opposed to (seemingly) faith in a single man. Hopefully you guys get FDR and not Hitler (you know what I mean).eumaas wrote:I started off with amazement at seeing all these voters everywhere, but it's settled into a deep unease.Dr. Medulla wrote:That's the one thing (well, main thing) about Obama that I'm uncomfortable with—the whole cult of personality that is mainly younger supporters have thrust upon him (or maybe I'm naive and he's actually orchestrated it all). Re: Calling All Americans
I agree. I'm not one given to faith, spiritual or secular, and the devotion Obama inspires fascinates me on a cerebral level as much as it bothers me on an instinctual one. Two of the possibilities—a happy surrendering of personal freedoms (absolute and otherwise, ho ho) or the angry backlash of the betrayed—don't seem worth the risk.eumaas wrote:Wherever people drink deeply of the waters of Trust In Authority, I can't help but feel uneasy.Dr. Medulla wrote:Heh—you're one of the few non-Republicans bothered by the (relatively) high turnout. I should also add—and I don't mean to piss on anyone's campfire here—that a lot of hardcore evangelicals thought that their moment had arrived in 2000 when their Christian warrior was elected. But it didn't happen. Obama's a competent and extremely smart guy, but expectations for what he can accomplish should be tempered.
