The Roy Moore Thread

I think Roy Moore deserves his own thread. I have never been more embarrassed to be an American than I am right now. It blows my mind that ANYONE can still support this clown. It makes my head spin. The guy is a creepy, racist, homophobic buffoon - yet - people are still supporting him. Our "p"resident has endorsed him. They're so hellbent on keeping a Democrat out of office that they'll ignore the fact that Moore is a shopping mall trolling pedophile.

I want to laugh because it is all so insane...but I can't because there is a very real chance they elect him!?

He captures well the two-word essence of the conservatism and the Republican Party: "Fuck you." It's a mentality driven by fear, bitterness, and hostility for anyone different to their 19th-century unchallenged white male Protestant ideal. It's politics as vengeance. There was a time—I can even remember that time—that conservatism in the US could claim a critical intellectual component, but it's utter lizard-brain nastiness that merits no respect.

Agreed. It's become the party of those afraid to change with the times. I think they see a world that has gotten too big and changed too fast and they don't know how to respond so they circle the wagons. It is (I hope) a losing fight and that time is on the side of those of us who are more enlightened.

And Franken is resigning so the dems can try to claim some kind of moral high ground that will never pay off.

Some things you do not for political gain but because adhering to a principle is more important. Not suggesting that Democrats aren't operating under principle here—for all I know, they might think this can be a wedge issue to be used to sway independents in the 2018 election and Franken is a safe sacrifice, as another Democrat will fill his seat—but accepting punishment, something that actually hurts, for immoral conduct is a bare minimum good.

Franken should resign entirely based on his own case.

Agreed. Franken did some bad stuff and I think he did the right thing by stepping aside. Meanwhile, we have a president who bragged about doing shady shit on television. Why is he not held accountable? One can say the Dems are trying to take the high road for political gain - but Franken is not the only high profile Dem to step aside this week. What about Trump? What about Ray Moore? Those two clowns can keep making excuses...they can keep denying they did anything wrong...they can keep painting their accusers as liars. I think the American people deserve some accountability. I thought Franken was a good guy. He was a real lion standing up against Trump and his cadre of psychopaths...but he screwed up and it cost him. I just really hate that the GOP can keep flying the flag of morality and “values” while supporting cretins like Ray Moore. That piece of shit should be in prison - not running for the United States Senate.

That said...the South is a fucked up place. I’ll play my Yankee card any day of the week. My home state of Wisconsin is not perfect. Our governor is a wiener, but we also elected the first openly LGBT woman to the Senate. We get it right sometimes, but the South is more-or-less a third world country run be religious zealots.

Yup. It hurts to lose him - he was one of the most vocal opponents of our moron president - but he messed up. Country above party on this one. We deserve accountability from our leaders. We don’t get it very often. It just kills me that Roy Moore can also do really shady stuff. The bastard was banned from a mall for harassing teenaged girls, but he stands a very good chance of still being elected because Alabama is full of inbred, racist, Bible banging psychos. If you’ve never been to the Deep South - consider yourself lucky. Beautiful part of the country - but seriously messed up when it comes to people and the way they thing...

I’m not even going to waste my time defending the south because you’ve smugly made up your mind already, but know I’m holding back the “fuck you, the south is more multifaceted than you will ever understand” out of politeness.

I apologize. I will admit I sometimes get riled up and vent when I should keep my mouth shut. That said, that is the opinion of a lot of people in the North. I’m not saying it is right - just stating the facts. I know the South is more multifacted than I sometimes care to admit. It is just a tough thing. Help me understand the thinking that gives someone like Roy Moore a fighting chance. If you need to tell me to fuck off - I can take it. I’m not as close minded as my earlier comments might indicate - but that really is how many people in the North see the South. I know it is not a healthy way to conduct business...but what can we do to make it better. Seriously. I can admit I generalized the South - but help me understand why I’m wrong.

1. It’s white evangelicals. They have been running the show for ages. Evangelicals would vote for Satan himself if it would stop abortion.
2. It’s gerrymandering.
2a. The south itself has far more African Americans per capita than most of the rest of the country, and they sure as shit aren’t voting republican, but said gerrymandering, often down to the fucking street, insured their votes mean fuck all.
2b. Outright voter suppression is super common, thanks to all sorts of tricks ranging from ID shenanigans to taking advantage of the criminal justice system’s disproportionate incarceration rates for AA’s to keep them off the rolls.
3. On a personal level, I’ve lived in the Chicago area for 13 years, and traveled randomly throughout the Midwest, and the racism rate seems comparable among white people here, they just have less blacks around to be overtly racist to.
4. 2016 showed that if Democrats drop the ball for even a second, large swathes of the country, like say Wisconsin and Michigan, will vote for a sexual abuser if they think he’ll lower their taxes

Pence's weird-ass rule about not being around other women if his wife isn't present almost seems admirable.

Good points. Gerrymandering is huge. It has really hurt Wisconsin (we’re heading up the case that is going to the Supreme Court). I’m reading your list and I’m shocked - but not shocked - how much this rings true about where I live. Voter suppression? Horrible in Wisconsin. I really think it swung my state from blue to red last year. My hometown of Milwaukee is the most segregated city in the country.

I don’t know. When I sit back and think about it - it really isn’t a North versus South thing. I’ll say the white evangelicals play a big role in how the North portrays the South. I know it is not fair. I think we too often paint things black and white. Roy Moore is all over the news. He must be the face of the South, right? I know that is a trap, but it is an easy trap to fall into because it gives those of us opposed to this crap a face to attack.

I love this country. I love it for all the faults it has. I want it to be better.
