I'm hoping (perhaps against hope) that Canada's social democrats, who will be electing a new leader, take the correct reading of all this and shift the fuck left. The Conservatives just picked another Harperite and the Young Prince is, well, a neoliberal himself, albeit one who smiles nice and does seem legit on a number of social and cultural issues. There is a populist opening for a left party, but I'm skeptical that the party, too dominated by lawyers, social workers, and other professionals, will see that sense.
The conservatism of the professional class is definitely an obstacle. Has been in the UK and US for sure.

I've been saying for a long time that the NDP can't become truly useful until the "educated class" get shuffled into a supportive/advisory role rather than a leadership one. Even the best of intentions get corrupted by a self-interested myopia that leads to paternalism or outright co-option.

From Brexit to Trump to this, it's evident how the neoliberal norm dominates the expert class, and how difficult it is for them to consider that certain norms are no longer so amongst the masses. To a degree, I don't hold it against them—it's asking a lot to tell a successful person that everything they understand is increasingly being discredited—but there's no excuse now not to be more self-critical and open-minded about what's going on outside the cocktail parties. As shitty as the world is and the greater crises looming, but it's remarkable to be alive at a time when leftist ideas are gaining in appeal, and that it's happening rather organically. That is, for the most part leftist thinkers have dropped the ball the last several decades, but it's the tipping point failures of neoliberalism, globalization, and austerity themselves that are pushing more people leftward. What's amusing to me is reading the neoliberals respond by calling people whiners or morons, or arguing that the good times are just around the corner, just give it more time—they sound like goddamned 20th c. Communists, operating on a bullying faith when reality was so confounding. As historians like to say, history doesn't repeat but it does rhyme.
