Not to be overly simplistic but I think that to so.e extwnt sums up the reason so many people vote against their own interests.

It's kinda funny that the right likes throwing that snowflake line against liberals and the left, but apparently the veterans are so fragile that they'll dry up and blow away if a handful of people don't posture themselves in a particular way during a song. Maybe work on toughening up them vets rather than protect them from such a cruel world.
