Living in Michigan for 10 months shattered my concept of a town and how it works. In New England we have a board of selectmen (or selectwomen) or mayors who are voted in with most important business conducted in open town meetings. It all seems so simple and clear. Out in Michigan they have this weird town vs. township thing that I could not figure out. In Massachusetts the county designation is really just a function of the court system (one big county courthouse to handle legal affairs, deeds, and that sort of thing.
