I've been arguing for some time that football is cascading toward minor status. The mounting evidence that playing it competitively literally shortens one's quality of life is going to mean fewer kids from families of means will allow their kids to play. It'll come to be dominated by kids from poverty who do so for the same reason so many join the military—it's a risk, but there's greater potential reward than working at Wal-Mart. As well, the potential for lawsuits could cripple some high school and small college football programs (or the insurance premiums to deal with the same). I don't watch much football anymore because I can't get it out of my mind that whenever there's a big hit, that guy suffered some degree of brain damage.
