It's weird, cos I'm alright with the central focus of a comedy series being an unlikable prick (David Brent, Basil Fawlty, Rab C Nesbitt), so long as they're compelling and interesting with it. Maybe it's a mainstream American thing that doesn't want to recognise the tragedy that makes those kind of characters so funny?

This is generally true. Arrested Development comes to mind as a show with a bunch of mostly awful people, but so otherwise inept that we don't hate them (which is pretty much the key to David Brent).

Best written Brit-com ever. Did it see much action overseas? Is it repeated in NZ? You never hear our American friends mention it.
