The Boss is out this evening (some lecture on campus—*snort*) so I'm watching Rounders. God but I hate-love this movie.

I'm an Edward Norton fan but have never seen this movie. Back in the day my local video store had a copy but it was damaged and wouldn't play never got around to bootlegging it.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Mar 2019, 7:17pmThe Boss is out this evening (some lecture on campus—*snort*) so I'm watching Rounders. You wouldn't hate it. John Malkovich's insanely over-the-top Russian accent is worth the price of admission.revbob wrote: ↑25 Mar 2019, 9:52pmI'm an Edward Norton fan but have never seen this movie. Re: movies
Us (2019) People in Santa Cruz wear Black Flag T-Shirts in 1986 and 2019. Some other stuff happens too. Good movie, I think I like Get Out better, I’ll revisit in a few months.
Overlord (2018) During WWII, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines where they stumble upon diabolical Nazi experiments. This action/horror hybrid was baddass, I recommend it wholeheartedly.
H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine (1960) On New Year’s Eve 1899, a scientist sends himself thousands of years into the future where dimwitted blonds are dominated by a species of furry albino brutes called “Morlocks.” Lots of stop-motion effects in this, director George Pal honed his animating skills in the 40s on a series of “puppetoons” about a racist stereotype kid named Jasper.
Chamber of Horrors (1966) This one means a lot to me, for a while in my 20s I didn’t have cable and I caught this one on a late night showing and fell in love with it. This is a film that was made as a TV pilot, but was canned and turned into a theatrical release instead, with an added "horror alarm" that would warn audiences against shocking scenes. Well, the "shocking" scenes were nothing to cover your eyes about, but that doesn’t matter. The premise is that a suave playboy and an older gentleman who writes non-fiction crime books run a "House of Wax" in early 20th century Baltimore. With the help of their midget assistant, they help the local police solve murders, and make these murders into displays in their "Chamber of Horrors." In a powerful opening scene, a local rich guy forces a priest to marry him to a corpse in a wedding dress at gunpoint, then it’s implied that he does you-know-what with the body. He’s eventually sent to the gallows, but escapes by chopping off his own hand. Assumed dead, he comes back a few months later with a series of violent attachments to his now stump hand (this movie precedes Enter the Dragon) and he wants revenge on those who were responsible for his capture.
Black Cobra Woman (1976) The beautiful Laura Gemser dances naked with snakes in Hong Kong and Jack Palance is wealthy recluse who collects snakes, so match made in heaven, right? Wrong, Jack has a brother who gets his kicks by adding venomous snakes to his lovemaking equation, often resulting in fatalies. SPOILER: He gets his comeuppance when a live cobra is shoved up his anus. Not much script here, the film is mostly an excuse for Gemser to be constantly naked, and a few other girls as well. I would have realized this was more of a Joe D’Amato sex movie than a Joe D’Amato horror movie if I had known its alternate title was Emanuelle Goes Japanese.
Play Motel (1979) X-Rated semi-giallo about a blackmail ring running out of a hooker hotel in conjunction with a porno mag. A few people get murdered, a ton of people get naked. It leans almost completely on sex and hardly on story, but it gets maximum sleaze points.
The Faculty (1998) Hydration-loving space aliens bodysnatch teachers and paranoid students fight back in Robert Rodriguez’ highly entertaining romp. Teenagers include Josh Hartnet, Elijah Wood, Jordana Brewster, Clea Duvall and Usher, while the grownups feature Robert Patrick, Piper Laurie, Famke Janssen, Salma Hayek and John Stewart! In a nod to the classic blood test scene from the Thing, the kids have to take crystal meth to prove they’re human. Meth dries them out and kills them! Lots of fun, and some surprise nudity at the end. Screenplay by Kevin (Scream) Williamson.
God Told Me To (1976) There are several mass killing on the streets of NY, and in each case the perpetrator says "God Told Me To." The detective on the case is highly religious and he takes the case very personally. His investigation leads him to some very strange information, including a possible second coming of God on Earth, and some information about himself that will change his life. Look for Andy Kauffman as a killer cop in a scene that great Larry Cohen shot during a New York parade without a permit! One of Larco’s best.
Special Effects (1984) Eric Bogosian is a filmmaker who murders a starlet during sex and films it. The abusive husband gets pinned for the murder, but Bogosian bails him out and convinces him to act in his new movie about the recently committed crime, with intent to incorporate the snuff footage in to it. They find an exact double to play the girl. Zoe Tamerlis (Ms.45) stars in a dual role and spends a lot of time topless. Larry Cohen’s script is hard to swallow at times but fun nonetheless. Look for a Larry cameo as a reporter.
Grave of the Vampire (1972) Vicious vampire Caleb Croft rises from his grave and rapes a co-ed in 1940. 30 years later her full–grown, muscle-bound, half-vampire son tracks his deadbeat dad across the country, to finding him teaching adult classes at a small town night school. Lot of sex and violence, but not very graphic, in fact it has a PG rating. I didn’t recognice Micheal Pataki (vamp) or William Smith (son) but they have over 400 film credits between them! Despite the lack of explicit sex in this one, director John Hays would end up making soft porn! This was surprisingly entertaining.
Critters: A New Binge (2019) This Shudder original series has got a bad rap, and yeah it's pretty bad, but not unwatchable. it's split into 8 episodes, around 8 - 10 minutes each and has the familiar story of a dorky teen who likes a pretty girl when monsters attack. Gilbert Gottfired and Tom Lennon are in a few episodes each.

hey, in Scanners there's a scene where a bus crashes into a record store, and among the many records visible in the debris is Give em Enough Rope.

Into the Spider-Verse was amazing.

Re: movies
Wasn't it? I'm not even much of a comics person, and I thought it was the best movie of 2018. Animated or not. It was the whole package - amazing animation, great representation of people of color, great music, great plot.
Got a Rake? Sure!

The code-switching scene alone was worth the price of admission and it was a fairly minor bit.

I saw the new Pet Sematary last night - the first version of the story I've ever consumed. Really creepy for 90% of it, with the very last part being tension killing slasher stuff.
