Yes, have fun with that. We got about 3 inches of snow in the Savannah area today, which is more than they've seen here since 1989. It'll all be gone by tomorrow afternoon which is great 'cos nobody around here knows how to deal with this strange white stuff.

During our brief time in NC, there was the possibility of a hurricane one summer. We were in the piedmont, so a fair distance from the coast, but all the local stations sent their weather dorks to the coast. Then the hurricane turned back to the east, back to the Atlantic, and even tho the dorks said we were lucky and should thank Jesus, etc., you could see on their faces that they wanted devastation, death, and at least a couple Horsemen.Rat Patrol wrote: ↑04 Jan 2018, 1:17pm

BTW...Jim Cantore is camped out in Rockport if you want to aim your spite at a hunk of land washing out into the frigid Atlantic today.

With that storm surge still kicking up rough surf, it's never been a better time to go SLURPEE WAVE surfing off the coast of Nantucket. . .

Back when Jane Curtin did Weekend Update, there was this story:
Despite the fact that this is the coldest winter in years, and that, with the chill factor, temperatures have been well below zero, the members of New York's famed Polar Bear Club were not discouraged from taking an early morning swim today. Sixteen members entered the frigid waters off Coney Island this morning, clad only in bathing suits to prove that they could brave even the roughest of elements. One humorous note: all sixteen members froze to death.

No surprise, we have the same weather conditions here. Melting like crazy during the day, then a flash freezing warning, snow, and witch's tit cold.

You have a flat roof?Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑02 Jan 2018, 7:42pmIn other weather-related homeowner news, when we had our roof resurfaced this summer, the slope was altered (it's a French-Canadian flat-style roof), which changed part of where water drains. We don't have much insulation in our attic, which I'm fine with because it melts the snow up there, keeping it from building up. But now, in the new drainage pattern, part of it is going to an area without an eavestrough and landing on a lower roof and freezing (as well as creating an ice giant up the side). So I went out and bought a deicing cable. I know it's not meant for flat roofs, but there is enough of a pitch that the water will definitely drain rather than pool. Tomorrow I'll be hooking it up to melt the ice and bring peace to the troubled land once more.
Moral of the story: There are times I wish I had a landlord to take care of this crap.
Who the fuck builds a flat roof in the great white north?
Anyway, are you sure that having so little insulation in your attic is the right way to go?
You're using a lot of energy to heat your roof to melt the snow off of it, and that's a shame, both to your pocketbook, plus that's what's causing the ice dams that are causing you grief.
I'd get a good house engineer to come out and take a look at your situation.
