Nah, he's got a modest contract so there won't be high expectations. Papelbon is still the most likely to be run out of town for being a big mouthed moron if he can't get the job done.

Really? The core of the Yankees is another year older and on the wrong side of their peak years. They'll be a very good team in '10, but overall I like the Red Sox pitching more. Should be a tight race, possibly coming down to injuries/bench.

I don't like our starting lineup and I have an admittedly irrational distaste for Lackey. I also see no real reason to think Beckett will be any better than he has been and we're essentially counting on at least two of Buccholz, Wakefield and Dice-K to really step it up which I'm... moderately confident about but not overwhelmingly so. I think if we perform at the top ends of our projections and the the Yankees perform significantly worse than they did last season, sure, the division could be competitive. Maybe the pitching and (hopefully) improved defense will compensate for what will be an even worse offense for us than it was last season, but I'm not super confident.

That said, I think the Sox look really, really good versus the Yankees in a short series/the post-season.

Substitute Lester for Wakefield, tho. Wake will get spot/injury starts, but nothing more.

SS should be better, even if Scutaro is league average, and catcher will provide more pop. Fingers crossed for DH. LF will be worse, and who knows about 3rd. So the offence will likely be a bit less productive than last year. Defence will be better and pitching definitely better, especially if Clay finally steps up. So, overall, I think they're a better team than last year simply because they'll give up fewer runs than they'll be losing in decreased offence. It's going to be uncomfortable for Sox fans used to seeing a team with a bunch of mashers, but when Dice-K is your #5, that ain't bad at all.

As good as the Yankees were last year, apart from ARod missing the first month, they never had any adversity—slumps or injuries. It's not realistic to expect that kind of good fortune again.

Two very good teams, as usual. But too close to call for me.
