First post in this thread in ten months—what's wrong with you nerds? Anyway …

Some people's awful opinions are so predictable. John Byrne's take on the new incarnation of Dr. Who is that it's a cheap stunt and an insult to shoehorn (his word) a female into a male role, when they should just write new strong female characters. In essence, it's tokenism. But given that the character is literally raceless and genderless—correct?—and has only been male due to the biases of past writers and (probably) the fans, that's complete batshit. Hell, if Dr. Who can assume the identity (or is just appearance?) of anyone, it's been well against the odds not to have been female up to this point, so this would be a sensible correction just of probabilities (at least in terms of sex, not race). Jesus Christ, I *might* see some merit in Byrne's line of critique if Batman was rebooted and the Joker or Robin was made female, but given that the essence of Dr. Who is a fluctuating identity, being cranky that it's not another white male betrays a nasty egotistic prejudice.
Yeah, Doctor Who is pretty much the ultimate case in how that line of reasoning doesn't work. There's been no in-universe reason for the character not being a woman. And the show has done a lot of work in the last couple years making it textually canon in-universe that timelords can present in any gender. So, it's "stunt casting" or whatever in the sense that hiring anyone with the idea they'd attract viewers is "stunt casting", I guess. But, like, it doesn't seem different than casting Peter Capaldi or whatever.

My initial concern at the new Dr Who was that it was a rather bland looking 30-something actress I'd never heard of (admittedly I don't watch a huge amount of tv) but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Capaldi and Smith are hard acts to follow so very good luck to her. I do think it's rather wonderful that little girls will grow up with a female Doctor.

Personally I'd have liked Sandi Toksvig or Tamsin Greig as the new Doctor - someone quirky with a bit of an edge. Pretty much everyone I know (and I know at least three other people) think I'm insane re. Sandi Toksvig :twitch:

Tamsin Greg would be a pretty cool Doctor, I bet.

I haven't seen Broadchurch, so I didn't know who she was either. At first glance I thought it was Viv Albertine. That would have been good!

Jodie Whitaker is incredible. I really enjoyed her in Broadchurch and the episode of Black Mirror she was in. I'm really looking forward to see how she plays the Doctor.

I'm gonna say that SM has approximations of at least three of these in his closet.

I've never seen him wear anything else besides his Skagra "costume"

Dagnabbit, you're supposed to be humiliated for liking a thing that I don't cotton to and so disparage to cover up that lack of interest! Blush, damn you, blush!

Can't see a reason why liking this would be at all humiliating, to be quite honest.
