I literally just heard the non Pistols version of "God Save the Queen" for the first time ever. Holy crap it was worse than I imagined.

When I was a kid in elementary school, we began the day with O Canada, but assemblies began with God Save the Queen. And every classroom had a portrait of the queen (never the prime minister). Gotta brainwash 'em when they're young.

I was at a ball game here when the Ottawa team played one from Japan, and the Japanese anthem carried a lot of emotional heft to it.

I've read Sandbrook's history of the US in the 70s. It's fun narrative history, but not especially complex. Which isn't a bad thing, only that it's not going to challenge anyone.
