Yes it's based on the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West" by Wu Cheng'en. It was shown here in the UK in 1979-80 and was played by chinese actors then dubbed to English by the BBC, the BBC did not show all the episodes made at the time and were selective. The remaining episodes were shown in the UK by Channel 4 in 2004.
