Not my significant other (that would be the long-suffering Mrs. Spiff), but our son Stephen has been accepted in the TAPIF (Teaching Assistant Program in France) program.

He leaves in September to his teaching assignment on Réunion Island.

We will, of course, just have to visit him this coming winter.

That sounds lovely. I have enjoyed the Caribbean French territories and would imagine this one is delightful as well. I am curious as how one gets there. Expedia just pitched me an outrageous sum. I am honeymoon shopping for January.

Perfect time of year for hiking to the top of an active volcano (naked, of course).

Sweet! Quite exotic.

My son has figured this out already. You should search for a flight from Boston to Paris, and then search separately for a flight from Paris to Réunion.

I'd you use Expedia or similar and search for both segments together, you get outrageous prices.

Good thinking! There’s nothing wrong with slapping a couple days in Paris onto and trip either.

I was In Guadeloupe last year and loved it. I especially like the mixture of French and Caribbean cooking. I’ll be curious to hear how this trip goes for you. I’d guess a mix of French, African and Indian with a little seafaring Islamic cuisine tossed in for good measure.

I'm expecting some good weed, too.

Oddly, no such luck in Guadeloupe although I can't say we looked. It was a dry out on the beach sort of trip. Denver on the other hand... the altitude plus the spiked lemon drops got me pretty screwy.
Cannabis in Réunion is illegal, but is grown illicitly and is locally known as zamal, a term that appears to be of Malagasy origin but does not currently exist in Madagascar. Cannabis in Réunion is used both recreationally and ritually.[1]
