From what I've heard, using the AC is more fuel efficient than rolling the windows down, because of wind resistance or some such thing. The windows down thing is fine in March and October, but in July? Fuck that noise.

I have a beat to shit car, but it has functional AC. The AC will probably outlive the car (which would be a first for me, but that's how it's looking with this one) so I'm using the AC while I can. If the AC kicks it before the car does, I have a solid backup plan..

Seriously...

The media have been focusing on the teenage knife killings big-time over the last couple of weeks, something like 18 in London alone this year, pretty much the same as last year I think, the fact that a couple of middle-class white boys have recently been victims has of course nothing whatsover to do with it or am I being a cynical old git...? The scary macabre slaying of the two French students has added to the hysteria.

The kids doing the killing are for the most part from nothing, have nothing and never will have anything, they know it, we know it and the phrase "Nothing to lose" couldn't be more apt. All they have is their image/rep/pride etc and maintaining that in front of their peers is all they give a shit about. Broken families, poor schooling and drugs/booze are all pointed out as main reasons for this apparent breakdown in society but what isn't usually mentioned is that the gap between the rich and poor has never been so great.

The consumerism nightmare that is present day life (cheers for starting that Thatcher you cunt), where the more shiny flash shit you possess reflects your place in society is so fucking wrong I don't know where to begin. Footballers, pop stars and even z-list so-called celebs flaunt their wealth like never before.

Kids grow up thinking this is what you do to be somebody or to be noticed. Sadly most of them will never have a pot to piss in and the only way they are ever going to have a blingin' watch like some toss-pot DJ is to steal it off someone stupid enough to wander around with a couple of years wages round their wrist, we've basically created an aspirational society thats aspiring to the wrong fucking things.............

Rant over...

If it's a typical St. Louis summer day, and by typical I mean in the mid to upper 90's with high humidity, then AC. If it's the one day of spring we get each year, than windows. I'm in Seattle right now visiting a friend from college, and the weather has been absolutely amazing. She doesn't have AC in her house, and it's been so pleasant just to leave the windows open. Unfortunately, being Seattle, the neighbors all play Candelbox. Just kidding. I would fit in so well here -- everyone seems to be pretty damn angry and moody. And it's really casual.
Oh, and BTW, I rescued a dog the other night. You heard me.

Hollah!

Speaking of rescues, I've got lots of stray kitties pouncing around here in need of rescue.

We are getting extreme heat here on the west coast. Still, it's about 60 by the time I need to go to sleep.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Where did you cut and paste that from ?? Fine words although one small point "from nothing, have nothing and never will have anything", I still believe (maybe naively) that it is possible to achieve if you want to and this is where parenting is the issue.
The scariest thought is that the generation you refer to who havent really been exposed to or had any experience of what parenting is, are parents themselves of a whole generation of feral kids.

I can string a few words together when bothered ;)

I wish I could be more optimistic but even the best parents would have a hell of time trying to keep their kid on the straight and narrow living somewhere like the Stonebridge estate, the pressure on the kid to conform to the gang culture would be huge. The only solution would be to move away but that would probably be above a lot of families means. There will be a few success stories of course, usually sport or music related and the odd genius who manages to keep their head down and gets to study at Oxbridge but overall the outlook is pretty bleak :(
