The media have been focusing on the teenage knife killings big-time over the last couple of weeks, something like 18 in London alone this year, pretty much the same as last year I think, the fact that a couple of middle-class white boys have recently been victims has of course nothing whatsover to do with it or am I being a cynical old git...? The scary macabre slaying of the two French students has added to the hysteria.

The kids doing the killing are for the most part from nothing, have nothing and never will have anything, they know it, we know it and the phrase "Nothing to lose" couldn't be more apt. All they have is their image/rep/pride etc and maintaining that in front of their peers is all they give a shit about. Broken families, poor schooling and drugs/booze are all pointed out as main reasons for this apparent breakdown in society but what isn't usually mentioned is that the gap between the rich and poor has never been so great.

The consumerism nightmare that is present day life (cheers for starting that Thatcher you cunt), where the more shiny flash shit you possess reflects your place in society is so fucking wrong I don't know where to begin. Footballers, pop stars and even z-list so-called celebs flaunt their wealth like never before.

Kids grow up thinking this is what you do to be somebody or to be noticed. Sadly most of them will never have a pot to piss in and the only way they are ever going to have a blingin' watch like some toss-pot DJ is to steal it off someone stupid enough to wander around with a couple of years wages round their wrist, we've basically created an aspirational society thats aspiring to the wrong fucking things.............

Rant over...

When I used to fall asleep on the #18 night bus from Trafalgar Square (every Friday) I would wake up and get kicked off at Stonebridge Estate. No passing cabbies and if there were they wouldnt stop so had to venture into cab office. Only way to stay alive was to act like a complete nutter and eveyone would leave you alone. The fact that you were a pissed white guy on his own wandering the estate was enough to convince the locals you were a nutter anyway.

I'm in Seattle right now visiting a friend from college, and the weather has been absolutely amazing. She doesn't have AC in her house, and it's been so pleasant just to leave the windows open. Unfortunately, being Seattle, the neighbors all play Candelbox. Just kidding. I would fit in so well here -- everyone seems to be pretty damn angry and moody. And it's really casual.
Oh, and BTW, I rescued a dog the other night. You heard me.
Oh, that Candlebox-blaring was probably me.... Sorry, I'll turn it down! When Screaming Trees comes on, I'm cranking it, though. :shifty:

Sweet --- I just brought the "Windows Down" posse up to 7. Now we're tied with the "Either or" clan.
I'm definitely a windows-down kinda girl* ---- I don't like the smell of car A/C; I like fresh air. And I LIKE heat, and A/C makes me too cold (you're wondering why I live in Seattle.... as am I....).

*Caveat - I may turn it on briefly to cool down the seats, or to unstick my legs from the leather.

Anyone hear the Jessse Jackson comment about cutting Obama's nuts off (sorry, thought thread drift was the topic ;) ....Windows down always--rain, snow, 100 degree days--because I'm not supposed to smoke in the new car (which doesn't have a bloody ashtray anyway--though Suburu does offer one that fits in the cup holder ) as long as I'm alone. Otherwise....up.

And the image of a nude Picard is quite...unsettling.

Oh, and the more society is marginalized by G8 corporate fascism the more senseless and random violence will become...nothing really new just that it is manifesting itself more in the middle class.
