This is true. None of these things were created with the notion of lasting, and while Marvel's idea of continuity and inter-connectivity did encourage greater reader investment and made those characters successful, at a certain point it does become a burden. There are still fresh stories to be told, but continuity and history increasingly hems in those possibilities. It just turns the whole thing into a kludge. If comics were better forty years ago, maybe it's just that weren't so bound up in an amassed complexity.

Twisted continuity aside, one thing that contemporary comics have over those of 40 years ago is the dialogue. There's a lot less corny exposition and the voices tend to be a lot more natural than they were back then.

Twisted continuity aside, one thing that contemporary comics have over those of 40 years ago is the dialogue. There's a lot less corny exposition and the voices tend to be a lot more natural than they were back then.
A notable difference is that older comics generally worked on a premise that the reader might be a newcomer, so there was less "inside baseball" dialogue. Nowadays, comics assume a more knowledgeable reader, often an adult reader. It works … but depends on a particular kind of audience.
