I've often asserted that all these titles should just end finally. I mean how many TV shows last this long? They all Simpson out, eventually. How many stories can you tell with these characters? The problem of course is that coming up with new characters that anyone is going to care about is literally impossible.
This is true. None of these things were created with the notion of lasting, and while Marvel's idea of continuity and inter-connectivity did encourage greater reader investment and made those characters successful, at a certain point it does become a burden. There are still fresh stories to be told, but continuity and history increasingly hems in those possibilities. It just turns the whole thing into a kludge. If comics were better forty years ago, maybe it's just that weren't so bound up in an amassed complexity.

Twisted continuity aside, one thing that contemporary comics have over those of 40 years ago is the dialogue. There's a lot less corny exposition and the voices tend to be a lot more natural than they were back then.

A notable difference is that older comics generally worked on a premise that the reader might be a newcomer, so there was less "inside baseball" dialogue. Nowadays, comics assume a more knowledgeable reader, often an adult reader. It works … but depends on a particular kind of audience.

Okay, I'll bite on this. I assume, of course, that it's another out-of-continuity story?

(The White Knight series is slow moving, but I'm still interested in how it proceeds.)

It's in-continuity (there's some multiverse stuff going on) — the entire series/event has been fab.

I mean, I just posted a panel of Batman holding baby Darkseid, yelling "I'm here to use him! Now stay back!"

I've fallen head over heels for Will Eisner over the past 5 or so years. His work is a nice antidote for spandex.
