Spent the last couple days re-reading Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier—the hardcover edition, which maximizes the absolute beauty of the art—and it dawned on me that it's fundamentally a response to Watchmen. It works the same vast terrain of multiple, multiple characters (I'm always impressed that Superman and Batman aren't the major players), historical context, and an extraterrestrial threat at the end, but where Watchmen is drenched is darkness and cynicism, NF is pure romance and inspirational heroism. It might be overstating things to say that how you regard superhero comics comes down to whether you prefer NF or Watchmen, but there is something to it, I think. I'm definitely a Marvel person, but NF is, far and away, the greatest superhero story I've ever read, for both art and story.

I'd be curious if there's any interview with Cooke that makes that explicit, because yeah, I think it feels like a natural response as you point it out. It's interesting in that it's still a very deconstructionist way to take on superheroes, but with obviously a very different set of aims and results.

The various characters in Watchmen? Mostly worked the convention circuit, some game show work, and endorsing infomercial products.
