Fellows, I just enrolled for the next years Stockholm Marathon. It will be my first. I am in a pretty bad shape at the moment, but there is plenty of time to train. The run is May 30th. I have thought about running a marathon for a long time, so I might as well have a go at it now.

It's a great goal Vim. Take it from me, buy new shoes more often than seems right and let aches heal.Vimmattu wrote:Fellows, I just enrolled for the next years Stockholm Marathon. Get a recommended running programme and stick to it. I have a very good one which is 18 weeks long. You have plenty of time to slowly build a good base level of fitness before you embark on the actual marathon stage of your training. If you can be 18 weeks out from the marathon and able to run a half marathon in training without too much trouble you are on the right track.

and what BB said. Get yourself top of the range running shoes (go to a specialised shop where they film you running if there is one near you). I'd also recommend good gear (shirt, shorts and socks) as well. You want to be comfortable when you are running and you pay for what you get with sports gear. A good barrier cream is essential too

Re: IMCT Running Club
Thanks for the tips, guys. I started by doing an one hour slow and relaxed pace (= in-breathing through nose) test run yesterday. It was quite comfortable. I managed some 9+ km in that time. Last year I ran 10 km in 48 minutes. That was pretty much the maximum speed I coul do, but practically without any training. It's yesterday's news I know, but I quess I'm roughly on the same level now that I was then. I have not done much running lately.

Thats a good base to start. You've plenty of time so dont over train or bore yourself to death. How do you train over winter ????Vimmattu wrote:Thanks for the tips, guys. I will be doing running as usual. I live in the southern Finland by the sea. Winter is usually not that cold down here, most of the time the temperature is above or near zero degrees Celsius. Running is ok in the winter. Weather is shitty of course, but I have got used to that. Sometimes road are icy and slippery. That is the biggest problem. Running on ice strains thighs and groin quite a bit, so adequate warm up and stretching is extremely important.

oo nice a running club!
i sadly don't get to do much running these days (don't like running my neighbourhood at night, and is the only time i really have to run!) but i ran 5yrs of xc and do road races here and there. i was supposed to do a 1/2 marathon back in july but family problems intervened. a full marathon is still my goal one day.
you guys have a type of running shoe your prefer?
i like mizuno's a lot.

Top tip: Next time you're down the dump building a new skateboard for your kids pick up an old tire, slash it into pieces, attach pieces to the sole of your feet with bits of string (tread side down for serious grip) and you're ready to run African stylee, I've seen it on the telly and they run like fuck , you'll save loads of money, it'd be Punk as hell and very green101Walterton wrote:Yep I also go Mizuno 'Wave'.mcnugget wrote:oo nice a running club!

Man, they were selling those in Benin. One pair costs about an Euro at the local market. I still despise myself of not buying a pair . Some cool footwear.
