Been wanting to post, but been too lazy. Now I'm... less lazy? That doesn't sound right. Anyways. For Christmas, I got some really good beers. Here they are:

-Samael's Oak Aged Ale (Mine was bottled April 2008, Batch 4): http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30/24357

This was a good but extremely strong beer, 15.53% alcohol by volume. This and the oak aging led to the beer having a distinct bourbon taste (which I love in a beer). There's also a definite lingering fruity sweetness the whole damned thing is incredibly heavy (and surprisingly carbonated). Another good micro out of the state of Colorado. I'll be picking up this one again.

Not an American beer, but decent ( ). I received this because my family had never heard of a white beer before, and it's pretty serviceable. I might revisit this beer in the summer, it's definitely not dark enough for January/February. The citrus taste is pretty pronounced, and it almost comes off like a soda. Not something I'd recommend as a primary beer, but on a hot summer's day it would make a nice change of pace. Of note: I received this beer bottled, not in a can.

I actually picked this up for New Year's Eve. I remember trying this when it was first released but not being too impressed. I decided to give it another try and warmed to it much more this time around (improving their batches, maybe?) but I still don't know if it is worth the price tag. The chocolate flavor is very pronounced, but it sits well with this smooth and malty beer. The beer even smells chocolatey, which is cool. I'd say it works very effectively as a "dessert beer," especially for folks who might otherwise shy away at that concept. A party pleaser for sure. Still, for the money you can get a lot more interesting brews.

I haven't actually cracked this one open yet. Only about 120 cases of the beer were made and I have bottle #1779. Each bottle is hand numbered, dated, and signed by the brewer. The beer has already sold out, so when it's gone it's gone. I'll be sure to let y'all know what I think of it when I finally crack it open.

Alo, re: beer consumption, my "rules" are situational.

Sure, if it's free I'll drink pretty much anything (although I couldn't even force myself to drink free Mad Dog or Milwaukee's Best). Still, my standards are usually pretty flexible when someone else is buying.

When the situation calls for it (like when I was in Chicago), I'm pretty easy going on the beer standards as well. It's more fun to get tanked on cheap beer with wolt in chicago than be snobby and turn down the beer.

When it's just me picking the beer or when I'm with more like minded folks, I generally go for the "drink better, drink less" rule. I'd rather by smaller quantities of really good stuff and savor it than try to get hammered. I really enjoy beer as a craft and for me it's more than just a way to pick up a buzz.

So, I'm not really a beer snob - the point, after all, is to have fun - but I'd say I'm something of a beer geek.

Which is why I'm now firmly in the "drink better, drink less" category whenever possible. That way I go broke before I pull a bonham.

word. I found with whiskey, if I was still conscious and there was still whiskey, I'd drink it. So, I go for top-shelf-ish stuff in smaller quantities and don't have that problem. I have outsmarted myself!
