Re: Whatcha reading?
Bedtime book:
I've read this a few times, when I was much younger and a bit obsessed with Nixon. It's fun as a detective story but really does exaggerate their role in bringing down Dick.
Tub book:
I've meant to read this for ages, especially as I've soured on so much of the Left's emphasis of the past fifty years on personal liberation. Lasch was a refugee from the Left who rejected the New Left and what came in its wake, and ended up a rather crusty critic of the Left who often sounded like a conservative. Which he was, in a moral sense. And so he looked to older critics of progress—that is, material progress, that the goal should be to live life more comfortably, to banish scarcity—as a means of critiquing the Left. I suspect that I'll be a lot more open to this line of argument more than I would have been even five years ago.
Research reading:
More on the whole brainwashing thing. Apparently this book was a huge sensation back in the 70s.

I was going to buy a used copy because I figured there'd be a shit ton out there, but the cheapest on abebooks was like $25 for a mass market pb. So, inter-library loan to the rescue.eumaas wrote: ↑28 Feb 2018, 2:18pmThere was a copy of it in my house where I grew up.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑28 Feb 2018, 2:15pmResearch reading:

Re: Whatcha reading?
I read this on my bookmobile rounds back when I used to work at a public library. Summary: Every ad photo is crammed with dicks, boobs & skulls, designed to make you buy stuff.eumaas wrote: ↑28 Feb 2018, 2:18pmThere was a copy of it in my house where I grew up.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑28 Feb 2018, 2:15pmResearch reading:

Weird. All photos in ads look like my parents fighting.JoseUnidos wrote: ↑28 Feb 2018, 4:59pmI read this on my bookmobile rounds back when I used to work at a public library. It bugs me that they haven't got Redford & Hoffman standing under their names in that picture.
Get In The Van - Henry Rollins. Audiobook. I've been meaning to read this for years. Boy, Hank had an unendingly shit time in Black Flag.
Re: Whatcha reading?
Just about wrapped up with this one. An entertaining read, but not full of very many revelations for a hardcore fan like myself. Interesting to read his side of it for once, though.
I've been going through a ton of Roth lately. I just started his so-called "Zuckerman series" a couple weeks ago, and finally got to this one which I think is his most famous besides Portnoy. Only a chapter in, but it's going well so far. I really dig Roth's casual narrative style.
Big fan of Maron, so excited to read his first book. This is *ahem* a bathtub book, I think.

Re: Whatcha reading?
No, but it's definitely on the list. I did like his appearance on one episode of Easy, and I'm looking forward to checking out his ep from the new season.

Re: Whatcha reading?
That's the only Roth book I've read, but I was quite taken with it. Bored one afternoon, I dialled up the semi-recent film adaptation. It was not a satisfying application of my time.Kory wrote: ↑02 Mar 2018, 2:41pm

I'm not much of a Maron fan, but his role on Glow is fucking hilarious.

Re: Whatcha reading?
Funnily enough, I just read an article last week that posited that we need to stop making film adaptations of Roth's books because they're never good. There's too much internal dialogue in his books to make the films at all interesting. It did mention that the only book of his that could work as a film would be the excellent Sabbath's Theater, which i agree with.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑02 Mar 2018, 2:47pmThat's the only Roth book I've read, but I was quite taken with it. Cool, I'm hoping to get to it soon. I don't know much about the show in general so it hasn't shot to the top of my priorities yet.
