I forgot how much of an iceman J.D. Drew was on that play, even for him. One of the most exciting plays in baseball and he acts like he's thinking about groceries he has to pick up on the way home. Even after the run scores, he's still stoic as fuck.

J.D. Drew was such a fantastic example of fans being dumb … or at least looking at the wrong things. The dude was a solid ballplayer, but he kept his emotions under wraps so "he doesn't care." He wasn't a showman, he was just a really good baseball player. Having him on the Red Sox was a really good lesson for me in how to evaluate players, to know the kind of shit to ignore.

I speculated last spring that the pitch clock would result in pitchers having to moderate their use of the gas. This doesn't change my mind on that point, tho it might be a few seasons yet before that shakes out as a proper approach across the game.

edit: An additional thought. When Babe Ruth emerged and wowed crowds with home runs, older players like Ty Cobb thought that he was ruining the game. Baseball was supposed to be strategic, about singles and sacrifices and stolen bases to create runs, not just clubbing a ball over the fence. They said it made the game one-dimensional. And there is something to that—it does substitute somewhat of chess-like approach for brute power, but it assumes that how you win matters more than just winning. Anyway, the always-throw-hard approach of the last few years seems akin to that old critique as it's less about pitching—strategy—than pure stuff. But in this case, the cost of the pure stuff approach is a short lifespan of the pitcher, both in IP per game and, presumably, career length. I would think that the players' union would have good reason to seek altering the rules in some manner to create an incentive to pitch again so as to protect its pitchers' earning years.
