You can tell its not Subway because its real bread. I went to one like 30 years ago and was thoroughly disgusted. I will only get a sandwich from a proper deli. In the NYC area, very easy to find. There's also this place on long island near Port Jefferson

Great sandwiches. Growing up in NY spoiled me for two things sandwiches and pizza.

The one thing that is essential for a good sandwich is good bread and many places don't get that, they have that mushy Subway-like crap bread. I spent a week in NY last month and got a great sandwich every damn day and I didn't go to the same place every time. Its just how it is done. Oh how I miss that. There are okay places where I live now but they pale in comparison to the real thing.101Walterton wrote: ↑16 Aug 2018, 7:18pm101Revbobrevbob wrote: ↑16 Aug 2018, 7:13pmYou can tell its not Subway because its real bread. The sandwich belt stretches from Baltimore to Portland, Maine. The rest of you are fooling yourselves. Bread is the most important ingredient. After that I’d have to say it’s all balance and preference.revbob wrote: ↑16 Aug 2018, 8:01pmThe one thing that is essential for a good sandwich is good bread and many places don't get that, they have that mushy Subway-like crap bread. Agree the bread is non negotiable however the fillings should not taste like school dinner food as they do at Subway.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑17 Aug 2018, 12:55amThe sandwich belt stretches from Baltimore to Portland, Maine. There's a place back home in PA that I love to get a hoagie from. Phil's is the name (my uncle calls it Filthy Phil's because it's in an old building in a sort of bad part of town and there may or may not have been roaches, I don't know.) Anyway, I told my partner that he has to try one of the sandwiches. He wasn't impressed. I said, it's all about the bread. The bread makes the sandwich good. He eats shitty walmart $1 bread so... He thinks meat makes the sandwich. It helps, but you have to have a good foundation.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑17 Aug 2018, 12:55amThe sandwich belt stretches from Baltimore to Portland, Maine. Re: Middle age health thread for fatties
When we lived in NC, we were generally unimpressed by bread quality (our department head was from NYC and despaired of ever finding a decent bagel). A friend of ours worked in an upscale bakery and she often gave us unsold end-of-day loaves that would otherwise have been tossed. Delicious stuff. She told us that the high heat and humidity made baking bread a challenge compared to more temperate places. That extra challenge also led places to not buy top-grade flour (not worth the extra cost). Any Southerners who have lived elsewhere (Wolter, eumaas?) have a similar view?

Re: Middle age health thread for fatties
I thought Michigan would have good sandwiches. They do not. There is a problem there where people seem to think they are being ripped off if the portions are not gigantic and most sandwiches are to huge to eat as god intended.
Re: Middle age health thread for fatties
More seriously, I do have a lot more food spoilage down here (even with air conditioning), and the threat of mold is ever-present.

Super true. We learned to buy fruit and veggies in small quantities because of spoilage.
