I’ve seen Girardi mentioned a few times, and not only will he be the same sort of hardass that players were already having trouble with, if he doesn’t do well, his being an ex-Cub will send Cardinals fans into conspiracy rage.
Girardi isn't moving from New York until his youngest is graduated from high school and off to college. Expiration of his Yankees contract was buffered by a year around the kids, so it was always expected that he'd take 1-2 years off in-between jobs to do broadcasting then take his pick of job openings judiciously. He's not in-play at all this very moment.

Second, Girardi has no patience for organizational dysfunction after his batshit MoY year with the Marlins when Loria was lighting fires all around him. The Cards are fucked up and infighting several levels deep into the front office. By luxury of being able to wait that's exactly the opening he's most likely to avoid. If he interviews with anyone this year it'll be because he wants to hear from a FO that's got a compelling master plan. That's not Jortsville...or Baltimore, or the Mets right now.

And yeah, he's a hardass. But the Matheny comparisons stop there. Girardi is empirically one of the 5 best managers in the game and it took a full decade to burn himself out of a singular pressure cooker of a market. Matheny is an end-stage meth head's idea of what a go-getter sounds like.
Oh, he’s orders of magnitude brighter than Matheny, who makes Dusty look like Earl Weaver. I just suspect the solution of “more hardassed” is the only arrow they have in the quiver.
Dick Williams was born in St. Louis and he's only been dead seven years. He's gotta be in play here. He'd tell those kids with their phones and hip hops how to play the game right.

Do it, Morans. There's absolutely no downside, trust me.

Who was the last player-manager? I'm thinking Pete “$1000 Against the Reds” Rose back in the 80s.

Innanet sez yes

The most recent player-manager in MLB was Pete Rose, who, upon being traded from the Montreal Expos to the Cincinnati Reds in August 1984, was immediately named the Reds' manager. Rose managed and served as a backup infielder until the end of the 1986 season, when he retired as a player.

There's only been 4 in the last 56 years: Rose (Reds, '84-86), Frank Robinson (Indians, '75-76), Don Kessinger (Meth Sox, '79...half-season, demoted to player-only in the organizational cleanup aftermath from Disco Demolition Night), and Joe Torre (Mets, '77...only for 2-1/2 weeks and 2 at-bats before formally retiring as player to manage full-time).

So, basically just Rose and Robinson as "real" player-managers hired full-season and with expectation of substantial playing time, tasked with doing something other than sitting on the lid for a last-place team playing out the string.

I thought Yogi was a player-manager at the end of his career, but Wikipedia says no. He did a Matheny and retired from playing straight into managing.

Can’t wait for Yadi to be a fairly mediocre manager but he told constantly that he’s obviously the greatest of all time.

Wow.

That article was right, btw. It took multiple viewings before my brain could even process the call.
