Adrian Beltre retires, leaving only Bartolo Colon as an active major leaguer who player in the 20th century. I hope someone rubs Beltre's head at his induction at Cooperstown.
Oh shit I didn’t realize Colon was the last one left.

More Beltre stuff, with video: https://deadspin.com/elvis-andruss-best ... 1830594345

I am genuinely bummed that we're not going to get new clips of a guy who brought so much fun to the game.

Goose fondly remembers tying up and leaving to die some rookie who smiled after the Yanks won it all in '78.

The guy smiled what's a man to do?

You can smile after you're retired and think back upon a career in which you played the game in utter misery, like a pro.

As a counter, an American entymologist is searching for a sufficiently miserable wasp to name after Gossage.

Good lord, the Mets are looking to take Cano to get the Mariners' closer Diaz. A PED guy who is 35 with a fuck ton of years and money left on his deal just to get a closer for a distinctly mediocre team in a division where both the Phillies and Braves are looking to dominate for several years. Unless the Mariners are paying 80% of Cano's freight, that's such a dumb Metsian deal.

Deal final. Seattle's chucking in only $20M; Cano's owed $120M over for 5 years through his age 41 season. Oh yeah, and Diaz is arb-eligible in a year meaning he'll be quickly overpaid if he racks up empty-calorie saves for a shitty team. Bravo, Merts.

It is baffling how one New York team can be run so well, taking advantage of its big market location to justify a large payroll when needed and maximizing the appeal to free agents, and another team in the same place acts like the Missoula Wet Farts. Even when the Mets do have successful seasons, it seems like a fluke. You can point to the Wilpons, and that's legit, but this is almost sixty years of this kind of comedy.
