Nomar was definitely roided up. And I agree, his career would have been longer, if some of the peak stats more modest, if he'd stayed clean. I remember Ted saying that of all the players he'd seen since he retired, Nomar was the one who reminded him most of himself and that he thought he was a guy who had a legit shot of hitting .400. Undoubtedly there was some recency bias there, as well as some Sox privileging, but late 90s Nomar did have that aura around him. In the end, tho, the main thing he shared with Ted was a chip on the shoulder.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑30 Oct 2018, 11:09amNomar is a sad story. It did suck to see the relationship go foul. I have to think he juiced and his muscles got stronger than his tendons. I am convinced he would have had a longer and more productive career if he has kept trim and flexible.

Dawson was still an Expo. I was going chronologically.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑30 Oct 2018, 10:14amMan, all you Cubbies guys love Ryno. I get it, he was a great ballplayer and was there forever. I guess I just find it hard to rate him over Awesome Dawson. Dawson just looks like baseball to me.
Also, you have to remember there were decades where there just weren’t a ton of HOF candidates.
There is literally a single game in 1984 where Ryno became beloved by a generation of young Cubs fans. The “Sandberg Game” where he tied and then won a nationally televised game against the Cardinals with back to back home runs.

Re: MLB 2018
I dunno. Pitchers seem taller and heavier than when I was a kid. That's the thing that always blows me away about pretty much any pre-90s baseball footage—the guys are so much skinnier and often shorter. The increase in size is more pronounced in football, but baseball's also got more gigantic.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑30 Oct 2018, 1:04pmStill big.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑30 Oct 2018, 1:01pm

They periodically rebroadcast that game on WGN. So many of those players on both teams look like tiny schlubs. Lee Smith looks like a goddamn mountain.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑30 Oct 2018, 1:20pmI dunno. I loved Lee Smith so much that I couldn’t even hate him when he played for the Cardinals. (See: Fowler, Dexter)

Oh hell yeah even a guy like Mickey Mantle was under 6 ft. Ted Williams must have looked like a giant at 6'3".Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑30 Oct 2018, 1:20pmI dunno. I remember being so excited when the Cubs signed Nomar. Almost as excited as I was about a rotation anchored by Kerry Wood and Mark Prior...
Jesus fuck, this team has put me through the wringer.

That era of the Cubs is always my go-to counterpoint whenever a fan confidently foresees a long period of dominance because of all the young talent. Yeah, feel hopeful, but shit can go sideways so damned fast.
