Would he not be a "former red sock?" Seems strange using the singular as a plural.

Wasn't he one of those MLB'ers who legit had to go on food stamps because he was making the league minimum and got called up from AAA like the day before the '94 strike?

Could well be. Baseball-reference has his first major league season as '95 and Christ but minor league players get paid peanuts. Anybody who complains about major league salaries, look to the minors and realize that that's what MLB owners would do if they still could.
