Yeah they are looking for the woods.

You are sort of correct

Object fixation.
People drive towards what they are looking at.
When you are going to crash you look at the hazards (tree, power pole, sign post) and because you are looking at it you instinctively drive straight at it!
That is why so many people die driving straight into a tree when it may be the only tree around.

I have no idea what those pages of anniversaries and puking were about, but I can get behind alcohol and puking. Which is a better deal than being in front of alcohol and puking.
