This happens so often with NYC slumlords that ex-MLB player Mo Vaughn made it a post-career life calling as a public advocate for these tenants. When they'd get the eviction notice or some other horrible living condition crisis Vaughn would have his reps bait the slumlord into a site visit for some bullshit reason. And then when unaccountable slumlord was least expecting it...bam...there's 300-lb. Mo Fucking Vaughn and his lawyers ready to have a "talk".
It proved so effective at bringing charges--because you don't screw around when Mo Fucking Vaughn answers the door--that he put a couple of the very biggest slumlord kingpins behind bars...then leveraged the savings from his playing career to buy up and fix the same buildings out of bankruptcy court as fully renovated rent-control housing. Then he flips the fully rebuilt properties for profit while baking in ironclad protection in the sale for more rent-control units set aside than when he first bought the property. Then he moves onto his next slum fixer-upper.
He's become something of a folk hero in the city for how many low-income units he's rescued from slumlord hell via that method. '95 AL MVP Mo Vaughn who ate himself out of baseball...who knew?
