The horror. The horror.

Terrifying.
I have memories as a kid of being scared of escalators as there were some tragic accidents involving kids getting caught and strangled to death.
Thinking back not sure if it was true or one of those things your parents told you to stop you mucking about.
All true mate there have been loads of kids/elderly hurt and killed on escalators.

Thought so as I seem to remember that is when they brought in those emergency stop buttons.

They can be bloody deadly. At the Mall that I worked in I sadly witnessed an old guy who was using two sticks to get around use the escalator with his wife. Going up no problems but sadly on coming down he being a gentleman let his good lady go first he then put both his sticks in one hand so he could grab the moving rail and missed he then stumbled forward knocking his poor wife to the bottom where very sadly she died.

Another time a young girl about 5-6 yrs old managed to get one of her laces caught in the serrated edge of one of the escalator treads. Luckily I ran up the escalor and managed to pull it free before she lost her balance.

The amount of times I witnessed kids running up the down escalator while the parents just stood around chatting was on a daily basis. You would ask the parent to keep a better eye on their child only to be told "how dare you lecture me on my child" to which I would reply "yep you enjoy life while they're still in one piece".

I remember the story of the kid who got his coat caught and it strangled him whilst everyone was trying to free him. This was before they had the emergency stop.

When they were first introduced, the shops hired a one legged man to ride up and down escalators all day to prove they were safe. Would have left me wondering how he'd got his injury.

Back in the old days, everyone was missing limbs. It was better that way.

Ugh, that horrible video of the woman in China falling into the escalator that was falling apart and saving her kid if you want to watch (not embedding): www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B4uKz8Kb2U
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
