I'd never heard of the Kiss or Kill scene and only a couple bands mentioned in this documentary were kinda sorta familiar. A pretty familiar story of any music scene, especially punk. Kids are frustrated with the current venues and music and start their own; it develops organically, a mutually nurturing relationship between diverse fans and bands; a few bands start to stand out and the scene grabs the attention of record companies; some bands get signed, others don't; resentment and ego clashes grow; the culture of the scene changes as originals drift away, saying it's no longer the good old days. In essence, the spirit that creates a scene necessarily dooms it.

I'm pretty sure I live in Los Angeles and I never heard of it. I've heard of the Dollyrots.

I was wondering if you were familiar with that scene. Which makes me curious whether the producers exaggerated how coherent of a scene this actually was.

I have a couple Dollyrots albums, which are quite good. Sounds like an interesting doc.

Oh, also, saw Incredibles 2 last night. Great flick, probably the best superhero movie I've seen in years.

I listened to a couple on Spotify yesterday. By the number pop-punk, but fun.

I've actually decided to show that documentary in my rock class this fall in conjunction with a couple smaller readings about scenes. Never done the movie thing in a seminar, so we'll see how it goes.

Good luck. I got the impression that a lot of zeds don't really like watching movies.

The only complaint I get in my evals is that I assign too much reading, and while I'm not overly sympathetic to that kind of critique—reading? in a fourth year seminar? my word!—I'm open to other options, to see if discussion is still productive. Mind you, I don't think discussing this film would work without those other pieces about scenes, so the reading is still vital.

I don't necessarily dislike them. But the difference in attention span is real weird.

I find students a lot more earnest than when I was that age. Very rare to see a bite of cynicism in them. Tho I had one young woman this last term whose answer for one question on the final began by explicitly rejecting the premise of the question before following thru. I smiled at that and it did influence me to read her response more favourably. Her term paper was also wonderfully snarly. I'd love to have her in a seminar because I think she'd be willing to speak her mind regardless of the mood of the group. She might not have enough hours completed to be eligible, but once I'm officially awarded the course, I'm going to see if she's interested.
