That's so awesome. If you have anymore more good Hellboy posts, please post periodically, Inder.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Thanks Inder, this bought a tear to my eye. Please post others great anecdote by Hellboy in your own time :approve:
To Wolter, I think I still have the original file of the logo as given to me by Nikola, on CD, as I made the Hellboys T-Shirts. I have to search boxes to see if it's still there (maybe it's not anymore), if I find it, let me know if you want an email with the image, for you tatoo.

If you find it, that would be great. I had to save a low-res image from the Hellboys myspace page.

i finally got around to making my name on here again and saw this. it's still so sad. i only got to message him through myspace mails, but he's a kindred soul and was lovely to talk to about life in general.
thank you inder for that posting. it was def. bittersweet but it really made my night.

it's a little early, but dia de los muertos is one of my favourite holidays and always celebrate it here. i have 2 more altars to make this season- one for a man who was like a 2nd father to me, and will be making one for nikola too. it's a grand event in my eyes and is a good way to celebrate/share with others the lives of the people who you're honouring.

That is a great idea.

For someone I'd never "met" face to face, I've taken his death harder than I ever might have expected. That 1950s thread really nailed me again.

Hey everyone

This is only my second post, so sorry if i'm not respecting the protocol. I hope my next posts won't be this long. I have a Joe anecdote about the song Pouring Rain which i thought you lot would appreciate. It's kinda long but you may like it. I met Joe in 91 on the Pogues tour and asked him about Pouring Rain, which i had on of those marvelous 84 bootlegs released on 7" singles. I believe it was on the one with the Chicago show where Joe shouts "If this is the Windy city, where's the fucking wind ?". He told me he lost that song, that the lyrics and music were gone and that he could only remember the title and not much else. He said he'd love to have it, cos he knew it was good and regretted never recording it with the Clash II (although he never called the band with that name, i hasten to add). two months later, when they were planning to play one of their Christmas Shows at the Brixton Academy in december of the same year, I asked my mum to pay for a trip out there to see Joe and the Pogues as a birthday present. I live in Paris, by the way.

So it's three in the afternoon, i'm seventeen years old in front of the door to the Brixton Academy in a not terribly safe neighbourhood (at the time, at least) and there's members of the Pogues asking where Strumboli (their nickname for Joe) was, and he shows up. Super concentrated, he's surprised to see me, says he can't talk too much, gives me a pass and says "follow me". We enter the large theater, he grabs my arm "watch the soundcheck and do'nt let anyone throw you out" then turns to the huge bouncer : "the kid's with me, no one touches him" and he's gone. I'm at this point floating on a small cloud. the show is terrific and afterwards, i'm trying to make my way backstage, expressing my boundless admiration to Shane McGowan who showed up in sign of support, and Joe is surrounded by a shitload of people. I sort of push around to get in and say to Joe that i've got something for him. Out comes the 45 and I point him out that "Pouring Rain" is on the record. "My song !" he shouts, "you've got my song ! I'd lost this song!" he hugs me and kisses me on the cheek and says "you don't know how much this means to me". So we're talking and he's introducing me around, offering me drinks (more than I could handle, actually), invites me to stay over for the show at the Town & Country club the next day, and finally asks me how come i'm here. I answered that it was my birthday and that i was turning eighteen and in France, that's when you get to drive and vote and drink and fuck legally. He turns to the crowd, "oi, let's give him the bumps", grabs my jacket and shouts "take off your clothes !" And he catches my feet while Josh cheuse (the designer of the record sleeves for Earthquake Weather and BAD's second album) takes my shoulders and they proceed to throwing me in the air eighteen times. Joe later made me drink my first brandy and since i was penniless they even drove me to the place i was staying at in the tour bus.

A few years later, in 1995, I'm talking to Joe on the phone for an interview for a fanzine, and he says to me that he finally recorded Pouring Rain for Sara Driver's film When Pigs Fly. "That's your contribution right there" he said. To this day, I consider it as one of the most touching things anyone ever said to me. He knew what it meant to a guy like me, a fan, giving a little help to this guy in his work at a difficult time in his career. At Joe's funeral, I met Jim Jarmusch and Sara Driver and told them all this, which they never knew.

So that's the story, from my point of view, of how Pouring Rain got recorded.
Just noticed this; thanks so much for posting, Inder. Hellboy is much missed.

Hey, this is to Wolter.

I finally found it on my hard drive. This is Nikola original layout of the Hellboys T shirt. The jpg he game me on CD-R. Feel free to use it as a tatoo, or whatever. He probably will be proud (assuming he is still out there which I doubt. Since he's gone, I don't believe there's any other side anymore, just here).

You should get the tattoo on the Saturday night of the meet-up. We'll get you good and drunk, then slip the tattoo guy some cash to also put "I eat cock" on your wrist.

Not yet. Need cash. Probably in the spring, after all my expenses die down.
