Think the problem here is that the site's got one of those old school CAPTCHA tests for registration...one of the ones that started getting cracked ages ago.
This free one's held up to the botnets so far: http://recaptcha.net/. They make a phpBB plugin that ought to swap out with the current one.
Google the words "spam" and "wowgold". It blew my fucking mind what a scourge that one piece of spam is on forums across the net. Literally...it's sending real money to buy fake virtual gold to cheat in World of Warcraft. That has got to be the dumbest fucking spam I've ever heard of in my life. I hated hardcore gamers enough before these clowns started showing up:

Yeah, and I'll only play mmo's licensed from classic properties like Lord of the Rings and Conan the Barbarian, I don't deign to slum it in Warcraft town with all the pseudo-nerds. So I can't be blamed.
