Not sure what forum to put this in...

Post by Wolter »

I have a weird question. I've been archiving old sound files to DVD from CD-Rs to save space. Most of these, for some reason (I blame realplayer on my old work computer) are saved in .mpga format, which is really annoying. Now, if I rename them, I can change the format to .mp3 and they will work fine - but if I have to do this one file at a time, it's gonna take a while, and I'm at work.

Is there a way to change the extension on multiple items without downloading a conversion program (I'm at work, and cannot install software without an admin password)?

Oh, and I'm on a PC, of course - office job.

This won't help you at work, but when you're at home try http://www.versiontracker.com. I know that there are Mac shareware apps that will do batch file type renaming, so I assume there's a Windoze equivalent.

(I also wonder if iTunes or some other player wouldn't automatically correct the suffix if dropped into its library. Maybe. Dunno.)

I MAY have found a DOS prompt.

dbpoweramp does batch file conversions. http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

It's not free anymore, but I think it used to be so free versions should be kicking around the interwubs. I've paid for the "Reference" version and love it.

For non-free things, places like this are handy …

I solved this. I just needed to run the DOS prompt 'rename *.mpga *.mp3' in the proper directory.

Thanks, though!
